Mixing Milk replacer
For calf raisers, preparing milk replacer is a routine task, often involving the mixing of hundreds - if not thousands - of batches annually. While the process may become second nature, it is critical to recognize that not all milk replacer formulations are identical.
Each product may have specific mixing ratios, temperatures, and feeding protocols that must be followed to ensure optimal calf health and performance. When introducing a new milk replacer, it is essential to review the instructions provided on the product label to confirm proper preparation and administration.
The following are key instructions to ensure precise mixing to minimize the risk of preparation errors:
FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS
Feed 4 quarts of high-quality colostrum within 4 hours of birth. Begin feeding milk replacer on the second day of life.
MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
Individual: Weigh out 8 to 10 oz (0.5 to 0.63 lb) of milk powder and mix with 1 quart of hot water (120ºF), mix thoroughly. Add additional water to bring total volume to 2 quarts. Feed milk replacer at consistent temperature from 100ºF to 105ºF.
Large Batch: Mix entire bag (50 lb) of milk replacer with 20 to 25 gallons of hot water (120ºF) and mix thoroughly. Add additional water to bring total volume to 40 to 50 gallons. Feed milk replacer at consistent temperature from 100ºF to 105ºF.

RECOMMENDED FEEDING*
Week 1: Feed 2 quarts twice daily.
Weeks 2 to 6: Feed 2 to 3 quarts twice daily.
Week 7: Feed 2 to 3 quarts once daily.

MANAGEMENT
-
All mixing and feeding equipment needs to be sanitized properly after each feeding.
-
Calves should be housed in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated environment.
-
Provide clean water and fresh calf starter daily starting on day 2 to promote rumen development and weaning.
-
Scouring calves should be fed 2 to 2.5 oz of ELECTROLIFE REHYDRATE or RENEW oral electrolytes diluted in 2 quarts of warm water to maintain proper hydration.
*Consult with your calf management consultant for additional feeding programs.
